What We Do

Sustainable Urban Gardening
Using permaculture and organic farming techniques, the garden grows crops that thrive in Cape Town’s climate. By promoting biodiversity and eco-friendly practices, we help build a healthier, more sustainable food system.

Food for All
Committed to a zero-waste, share-all philosophy, everything grown is distributed for free, ensuring access to fresh, organic produce for the community. By honoring the land and its resources, we cultivate a more resilient and inclusive future.

Community & Cultural Preservation
Through volunteer programs, gardening workshops, and seniors’ gatherings, the garden fosters social connection while preserving Bo-Kaap’s heritage. Our work helps resist gentrification and keeps local traditions alive.
How We Started
Bo-Kaap Helpers Garden began as a grassroots initiative in 2016 to revitalize urban green space and support the local community with food and a space to gather. Established on a once-neglected plot of land, the garden was created by dedicated volunteers who saw the need for sustainable urban farming and a place where neighbors could connect. Inspired by Bo-Kaap’s rich cultural heritage, the garden embraces permaculture principles, growing indigenous and heirloom crops that reflect the neighborhood’s food traditions.
What began as a vision to transform an empty plot into a green urban space faced major challenges. From 2016 to 2019, Level 5 water restrictions prevented any planting. Just as the garden finally took root in 2019, strict COVID-19 lockdowns delayed progress again. In the initial weeks of operation, the garden was robbed over 10 times, losing essential gardening tools, supplies, and even children’s art materials—until the community stepped in to help secure proper fencing.
Despite these obstacles, The Bo-Kaap Helpers Garden persevered. Today, it has grown into a vibrant, sustainable food garden that provides free organic produce, hosts gardening workshops, and serves as a welcoming space for the community. By embracing permaculture principles and promoting local food security, the garden continues to nourish both the land and the people of Bo-Kaap. Through every challenge, the commitment to sustainability, cultural heritage, and community resilience has remained stronger than ever.
Today, Bo-Kaap Helpers Garden continues to grow, ensuring that both the land and the spirit of the community are nurtured for generations to come.
