About Us

Bo-Kaap Helpers Garden is dedicated to nourishing both the earth and our community through organic gardening, permaculture, and food sharing. By cultivating sustainable, locally inspired produce, we restore the land, honor our heritage, and ensure that fresh, healthy food is accessible to all.

Nestled in the heart of Cape Town’s historic Bo-Kaap, the Bo-Kaap Helpers Garden is more than just a green space—it’s a thriving community initiative focused on organic gardening, permaculture, and food justice. This volunteer-driven urban garden grows fresh, nutritious produce suited to the local Cape Malay cuisine and shares it freely.

Growing Together: Our Mission and Vision for a Sustainable Community

Our Mission

Our Vision

At Bo-Kaap Helpers Garden, we cultivate a vibrant, sustainable community by embracing organic gardening and permaculture principles. We grow food that honors the rich culinary and cultural heritage of the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, offering our harvest freely to nourish all. Our initiatives foster education, unity, and resilience, creating a welcoming space where all people can connect with nature, learn, and contribute to a thriving, inclusive community. All our work is guided by the ultimate goal of honoring Allah and faithfully nurturing, stewarding, and protecting the land and environment. We are dedicated to preserving and celebrating the unique traditions and history of the Bo-Kaap, resisting the forces of gentrification that threaten the very fabric of this community, and ensuring that future generations can continue to thrive in this culturally rich and spiritually grounded environment.

At Bo-Kaap Helpers Garden, we envision a future where sustainable living, community empowerment, and food security are within reach for everyone, while also protecting and celebrating the cultural heritage of Bo-Kaap. We strive to create a thriving, inclusive space that bridges the gap between nature and culture, where local food systems are nurtured, and people of all ages and backgrounds can learn, grow, and share. Through our garden, we aim to inspire environmental stewardship, foster social connections, and contribute to a more resilient, vibrant community, while safeguarding the unique history and traditions of Bo-Kaap for future generations.

A Sustainable, Community-Led Food Garden

At Bo-Kaap Helpers Garden, sustainability meets tradition. The garden operates on permaculture principles, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that nurtures the land while feeding the community.

We focus on:

  • Organic Gardening – No pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, just nutrient-rich, regenerative soil for healthy crops.

  • Local Food Culture – Growing local ingredients that support Cape Malay cooking.

  • Zero-Waste Philosophy – Every part of the harvest is valued—unused plant matter is composted to enrich the soil, ensuring nothing goes to waste and the earth is continuously nourished.

  • Food for all - Fresh, locally grown food is shared freely with the community—no barriers, no questions asked—because access to nutritious food is a human right
